Building a Personal Brand that Gets You Noticed

Now that most of our communication happens online, many people think about their “brand.” What does having a brand mean? It means showcasing who you are, your core values, and what makes you unique. Basically, demonstrating what you bring to the table. What you show about yourself online can determine whether or not an employer considers you worth hiring. Following are a few ideas for getting noticed through your personal brand.

Authenticity. Being authentic is at the core of your personal brand. You must know yourself well and be able to define what strengths you bring to the table so that you can show that to an employer. To do this, reflect on what’s brought you success in the past. Ask others what you are good at. Think about what kinds of activities give you energy and which ones are easy for you. After that, your strengths will emerge and be easier to determine.

Telling employers. When you determine this list of strengths, you next want to be able to communicate these values to potential employers. To do this, it’s best to know who your audience is. Who do they want to hire and why? When you get to know your potential employers better, you can craft the stories you want them to hear. You can get to know them through what you find online, talking with current or former employers, and asking good questions during screening interviews.

Polish your online presence. Social media has transformed our way of communicating and is at the core of needing a personal brand. The most important step of creating a brand through your social media is to delete anything that doesn’t align with what you want people to think about you. This includes removing any unprofessional or damaging content. Next, talk about what’s important to you through your posts. Commenting on or sharing other people’s posts also helps tell people more about who you are.

The idea of a personal brand is broad. It could include casual interactions like if you shake hands or what you mention during small talk. In today’s competitive pool of candidates, building and presenting a strong brand will make you stand out. To get started right away, think about how you would answer: Who am I? And What important issues do I stand for? Then build upon the steps above to have a good start expanding upon your brand.
