Every generation has to adapt to changes in the workplace. From machine automation to computer technology to now AI, there is always something new to get used. Today’s workforce needs to think about working remotely, how AI impacts their industry, and skills-based hiring. Here’s how to adapt to the ever-changing world of work.
Remote work. Before the pandemic, there were a handful of fully remote positions available. Now, this temporary solution many employers had to take has evolved into a full-time way of life. And those that aren’t fully remote may be in a hybrid model of some hours worked at home and some in the office. Conversely, some companies are starting to ask their employers to return to work in the office when they could previously work from home. Either way, thinking about how you want to work matters, especially when you want to switch jobs.
Upskilling. If this term is new to you, upskilling is learning or building upon skills you already use in your current role through avenues like certifications, mentorships, or taking courses. It helps you stay competitive, get promoted, ask for a higher salary, or land a new job. You could develop more skills by taking classes online through platforms like Coursera. You could also check with your current human resources department about any courses they may have or know about. Taking on a new project that challenges you at work or on your own is another way to upskill.
AI and hiring. As AI takes over the business landscape, it has its influence now in hiring practices as well as day-to-day operations. Many companies find that AI tools help them narrow down candidates with fewer staff and it ultimately helps them find better candidates. When preparing for AI to review your resume, you can actually use AI to help you generate sections of your resume and suggest a layout that works best for your industry. AI can also help you analyze job descriptions to identify the keywords you can use to satisfy the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
The landscape for hiring continues to change. Employers who used to weigh heavily on education are now looking more at skills-based hiring. So to get ahead, research what skills you can add to your list of strengths. Also
think about how you can continue to adapt to working remotely and brace yourself for the influence of AI.
