Getting laid off from a federal job is clearly a disappointment. You spent so much time passing their security clearances, background checks, and long hiring processes only to be let go before you wanted to leave. What do you do now? It’s time to make a plan that suits you and not everyone else around you giving you advice. Here are some suggestions for building a job search strategy.
Review what you’ll get on your way out. Each federal job is different. The benefits you’ll receive often depend upon the agency you worked for, how long you worked there, and your classification. Stay on top of what kind of unemployment compensation, severance pay, ongoing health coverage, and career transition programs you qualify for. Pay attention to the fine print because financial stress on top of lay off stress is a double hit.
Review your resume. Depending on how long you were in your position, your resume may need an overhaul. According to LinkedIn, “A federal-style resume can be 5+ pages long, but that won’t work in the private sector.” So, if you’re planning on making a move to consulting, nonprofits, or working for a private company, you may need to tighten up your resume. Either way, you’ll need to update your resume with the skills and accomplishments you gained in the position you just exited.
Think about what you want to do next. Being forced out of a position gives you the opportunity to ask yourself some key questions. Did you really like working in government? Did you enjoy your work duties? Did your job feel fulfilling? After giving it some thought, it might be that you no longer want to do a job like the one you left. You now have the freedom to network with peers and learn about what kinds of jobs they have and ask about their duties to see if they line up with your interests now.
While you’re dealing with this stressful time, focus on events that give you a boost. Resist the urge to isolate yourself. One way to feel recharged is to find an online or in person meeting with other professionals like yourself and share stories. This could be through a networking event or group dedicated to federal workers. Bonding with others helps you gain clarity over your situation and form next steps.
