As a GenZer, you have a lot of great qualities you can show an employer.
You’ve grown up in a tumultuous world, so you know how to handle change. Your mental health is important to you and you protect it above most other things. When you’re applying for a job, you should have a strategy so an employer will actually look at your resume among the many they receive. Here are some specific ways you can get your resume noticed as a GenZer.
Show off your digital background.
You grew up attached to a computer, so an employer will love how much related experience you bring to the table. This could range from social media marketing to coding to using specific software. On your resume, note specific accomplishments you have that showcase your digital skill set. Differentiate yourself by describing specific projects you’ve participated in.
Emphasize your volunteer work and extracurricular activities.
As a GenZer, you are probably involved with some kind of cause or charity because you tend to care about the world and social issues. This drives you to be involved with a variety of activities other than work. Put these experiences on your resume because they give an employer an idea of your character and soft skills. Make special note of any leadership roles you’ve held or things you’ve accomplished through your charity work.
Tailor your resume to the job posting each time.
Did you know that an employer can probably tell if you are using a generic version of your resume and didn’t try to tailor it to their job description? Instead, highlight each hard and soft skill that an employer wants through their job posting and cross reference it with the skills you have. Also, research the company you’re applying to work for. What is their mission statement? What charities are they involved in? What are they doing in your local community? Using this information to write your resume shows a company you’ve taken the time to learn about them and that you really want the job.
Updating your resume for each job can be time consuming but totally worth the effort.
After all, it’s really the only way you can initially present yourself to an employer. Each generation has unique qualities they bring to the table, so focus on those to get your employer’s attention. If you do, you’re more likely to be contacted for an interview.
